Edwin Sifuna's Unwavering Stand in Kenyan Politics

Edwin Sifuna, the Nairobi senator and ODM secretary-general, remains a steadfast voice in Kenya's shifting political landscape. In a recent interview with the Star, he addressed key issues facing his party and the nation.

The ODM party continues to operate smoothly despite party leader Raila Odinga's focus on African Union Commission duties. "Baba has largely been here – giving guidance," Sifuna said, expressing confidence in the current leadership structure.

Regarding relations with President Ruto's administration, Sifuna clarified the party's stance. "The central committee received three clear instructions: retain party identity, stay true to our values, and prepare for elections," he stated. He dismissed claims of confusion within ODM about supporting Ruto in 2027.

The party has begun preparations for the 2027 elections, starting with grassroots polls at voting stations. "We have successfully conducted elections at polling stations," Sifuna reported. He outlined plans for upcoming ward-level elections, followed by constituency polls and county coordination committees.

As Nairobi's senator, Sifuna defended his oversight record of county affairs. He cited his intervention in the Woodley groundbreaking project and scrutiny of programs like Dishi na County and urban regeneration. "Primary oversight belongs to MCAs," he explained, noting the constitutional framework requires county assembly action before Senate involvement.

Looking ahead to 2027, Sifuna confirmed his plans to seek re-election as Nairobi senator. "I hope the people of Nairobi will see the work I have done," he said, emphasizing his focus on oversight and legislative duties.

The veteran politician, entering his eighth year as ODM secretary general, dismissed concerns about his position within the party. He remains confident about retaining his role despite past challenges to his leadership.

Sifuna expressed optimism about ODM's electoral prospects, noting that 200,000 votes decided the 2022 presidential race. He emphasized the importance of maintaining party unity and strengthening existing support bases for future success.
