EFCC rejects court verdict, continues chase for Fayose's N6.9bn

Federal prosecutors announced plans to challenge a Lagos court decision that cleared former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose of financial crimes allegations. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission released a statement Wednesday through its social media platform following the verdict. Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke dismissed all charges against Fayose at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi during proceedings that concluded the lengthy prosecution. Anti-corruption officials confirmed they would examine the ruling while preparing appellate documents. The agency emphasized its commitment to pursuing the case through higher courts.

Fayose faced prosecution alongside Spotless Investment Limited on charges stemming from alleged financial misconduct totaling 6.9 billion naira. Authorities brought eleven separate counts against the defendants related to money laundering and theft accusations. The case originated from a July 2019 arraignment that marked the beginning of the extended legal battle. Commission lawyers had argued that evidence supported convictions on the serious financial allegations. The court ultimately found insufficient grounds to sustain the prosecution after years of testimony and legal arguments.
