Egyptian doctors storm Harare hospital as kids fight for new hearts

Heart surgeons from Zimbabwe and Egypt team up again to save young lives at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals starting Monday. The medical partnership launches its second phase of life-changing operations for children battling serious heart conditions. Families packed the hospital Sunday as doctors screened tiny patients ahead of the crucial procedures. Parents like the Chidzvondos watched their child struggle with breathing problems before learning about the program. Another mother, Vimbainashe Chakanungwa, described years of watching her daughter faint and struggle with stunted growth.

Dr Davidzo Murigo Shumba expects the team to operate on at least 10 children between ages six months and 10 years during the five-day mission. The specialists target various heart problems including faulty valves and birth defects that threaten young lives. Dr Simukayi Machawira reveals the ultimate goal involves training local doctors to perform these operations independently within four years. Professor Hesham Shawky emphasizes how the surgeries transform both physical health and psychological wellbeing for affected families. The collaboration gives children chances to play, learn, and develop like their healthy peers.

Rotary Club leader Dr Ndakaripa Hungwe recalls their first mission over 25 years ago produced a child who became a doctor. Gift of Life International CEO Rob Raylman points out Zimbabwe lacks public options for pediatric heart care. The surgeries offer dramatic improvements for children facing shortened lives without intervention. Local medical teams receive valuable training while saving vulnerable patients. The partnership builds sustainable healthcare capacity for future generations of Zimbabwean children.
