Mwingi residents finally see progress on the deadly Enziu Bridge project that killed dozens of people. The construction started back in December 2021 right after the tragic accident but stopped completely for years. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki stepped in to fix the money problems between the government and the building company. The contractor demanded 91 million shillings before returning to work on the dangerous crossing. Officials paid the disputed amount and construction crews came back in May.
Kindiki promises the bridge will never stop again during the building process. The government still owes another 74 million shillings to finish the entire 165 million shilling project. Workers must complete everything before December without any delays or extensions. The deputy president personally watches over the project to make sure it stays on track. He ordered the contractor to work without stopping until the bridge opens.
The original disaster happened on December 4, 2021 during heavy rains that flooded the river. A bus carrying church choir members and wedding guests tried crossing the broken concrete drift. Strong water currents swept the vehicle off the crossing and into the deep water. Rescue teams from the Kenya Navy and Red Cross saved 12 people from the sinking bus. Around 32 passengers died in the tragedy that shocked the entire community.
