Namibia's president just made Esi Schimming-Chase the first woman to get a permanent spot on the Supreme Court. She's been working as a High Court judge for a few years, and she's actually been doing Supreme Court stuff on an acting basis since 2023.
Before she became a judge, Schimming-Chase spent nearly two decades practicing law, and she'd already filled in as an acting High Court judge multiple times. The appointment kicks off next month based on what the Judicial Service Commission recommended.
Five other people got named as acting appeal judges for the Supreme Court. Three of them are already doing the job temporarily, and two High Court deputy judges presidents got tapped to serve through the end of 2026.
