Estonia's Margus Tsahkna summons UN after MiG-31 incursion

Estonian officials will convene an emergency United Nations Security Council session this week after Russian military aircraft breached the nation's territorial boundaries. Three MiG-31 fighter jets from Russia crossed into Estonian airspace above the Gulf of Finland during Friday operations. NATO forces deployed Italian F-35 aircraft alongside Swedish and Finnish jets to confront the intruding Russian planes. The European Union and NATO alliance condemned the airspace violation as a dangerous provocation while Moscow rejected these accusations. September 22 marks the scheduled date for the Security Council gathering.

This represents Estonia's first request for an emergency Security Council meeting during its 34-year United Nations membership period. Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna characterized the incident as part of Russia's expanding aggressive behavior across regional and global territories. Recent months witnessed similar airspace violations affecting Polish and Romanian sovereign boundaries. Estonia maintains strong support for Ukraine while holding membership in both the European Union and NATO alliance. Tsahkna emphasized that such provocative actions demand coordinated international responses from the global community.
