Ethiopia breaks ground on Africa’s largest airport

Ethiopia just started digging a money pit to become the ultimate air traffic kingpin. Abiy Ahmed kicked off work on a colossal site in Bishoftu that costs roughly $12.7 billion. This monster project aims to process 110 million passengers every year once laborers finish the job in half a decade.

Ethiopian Airlines is helping finance the upgrade to replace the crowded Bole Airport. The scheme involves a fresh multi-lane motorway and a high-speed railway reaching 124 mph. They claim this strategy secures their spot as the top gateway for continental trade and travel.

The African Development Bank already pledged $500 million to the cause. Officials are chatting with the Asian Development Bank and European lenders to grab more cash. It seems the government wants serious foreign investment despite active fighting in the Oromia and Amhara regions.

Mesfin Tasew Bekele admitted they moved 2,500 farmers to clear the 35 square kilometer plot. That relocation effort burned through $350 million previously. This follows other heavy spending on giant dams and city renovations across the second most populous nation on the continent.
