Evans Kibet duped into fighting for Russia in Vovchansk

Ukraine's 57th Motorized Infantry Brigade captured Kenyan athlete Evans Kibet near Vovchansk in Kharkiv Oblast after he surrendered. Kibet had visited Russia on a tourist visa when a contact deceived him into military service through fraudulent job promises. The individual presented Russian-language documents that Kibet signed without comprehension, leading to his passport and phone confiscation. Military officials transported him to a training camp where authorities threatened death for refusing service. After one week of preparation, forces deployed him to combat zones.

Kenya's Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing'Oei confirmed government investigations into four trafficking cases involving citizens caught in the conflict. Previous reports identified three other Kenyans fighting for Russia, while separate accounts describe women working in Russian drone factories. The Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime documented harsh conditions affecting 200 young Africans at Alabuga Special Economic Zone. Russian Embassy officials dismissed these reports as Western disinformation campaigns against African partnerships.
