Even Borderlands' creator couldn't survive inside Fortnite

Barnyard Games has closed operations after struggling to secure additional funding rounds. Industry veterans Matthew Armstrong, John Blakely, Mark Cieslar, and Christopher Sturr established the studio in December 2023. The company specialized in developing games within Fortnite Creative using Epic's Unreal Engine for Fortnite tools. Blakely served as chief executive officer and announced the closure through a LinkedIn statement. The studio initially raised $3.4 million in seed funding to support development efforts.

The team created titles such as Mega Fun Golf Zone for the Fortnite Creative platform. Epic Games did not own Barnyard Games despite the studio's exclusive focus on UEFN technology. Blakely attributed the shutdown to challenges finding investors during difficult market conditions. The closure raises questions about the viability of studios targeting Fortnite's user-generated content ecosystem. This development signals potential obstacles for developers seeking to tap into Fortnite's massive player base through creative partnerships.
