FabFilter has released Pro-Q 4, the newest version of its flagship EQ plugin. This version brings a range of fresh tools and enhancements to streamline the mixing and mastering process.

Spectral Dynamics

Building on Pro-Q's existing Dynamic EQ feature, Spectral Dynamics introduces a way to apply expansion or compression only to frequencies that rise above a set threshold within a chosen band. Instead of using a dedicated plugin to tame harshness and unwanted resonances, you can now enable this new per-band option alongside Pro-Q's usual dynamic and static EQ modes.

Instance List

A new Instance List button at the bottom center of the interface gives you a complete overview of every Pro-Q 4 instance in your session. You can zoom in and out, from a simple rack of mini spectrum displays to fully interactive EQ curves. With the Auto-Zoom option, the display refocuses on any instance you hover over. Filter, Quick Jump, Search, and Minimap features help you quickly navigate even large, complex projects. In Full-Screen mode, the Instance List is as visually impressive as it is practical.

EQ Sketch

EQ Sketch introduces an intuitive way to shape broad EQ curves. Simply drag your mouse across the main display to draw a curve, and Pro-Q 4 automatically creates a series of filters that follow your drawn shape, with slopes determined by how fast you move the mouse. It's a quick way to establish a starting point, which you can refine further using Pro-Q's standard controls. With the Instance List, EQ Sketch shapes your sound faster than ever.

Character Modes

Pro-Q 4 now offers three Character modes, adding an analog-style vibe. The Subtle mode introduces gentle, transformer-style saturation that depends on the input signal and the chosen frequency. Warm mode offers more pronounced tube-like saturation. Clean mode maintains the transparent, uncolored tone that Pro-Q is known for.

Additional Features and Improvements

Pro-Q 4 can handle up to 24 bands, with a wide range of filter shapes, including Brickwall slopes for High Cut and Low Cut filters. You can copy and paste EQ curves between instances, explore a newly enhanced preset browser with tags, favorites, search functions, and even fine-tune slopes in fractional increments. There's also a new All-Pass filter type for phase adjustments, direct parameter editing via dragging or mouse wheel in the EQ parameter display, and a fresh interface design that supports GPU acceleration, resizing, and full-screen display.

Dynamic EQ capabilities have been refined with Attack and Release controls and sidechain filtering for precise results. Linear Phase mode delivers greater accuracy, and Zero Latency and Natural Phase modes now provide more realistic analog-style curves. Pro-Q 4 also supports surround formats up to Dolby Atmos 9.1.6, offers flexible mid/side and per-channel processing, and includes powerful features like EQ Match and Spectrum Grab. The user experience is further enriched by standard FabFilter conveniences such as interactive MIDI Learn, undo/redo A/B switch, and an extensive help system.

All these improvements combine to make Pro-Q 4 a more powerful, intuitive, and creative EQ solution for mixing and mastering engineers, producers, and musicians.
