Fahmida flags bank freeze chaos as Dhaka sweats

Centre for Policy Dialogue Executive Director Dr Fahmida Khatun cautioned against widespread business account freezes during a banking sector discussion Saturday. The Bangladesh Bank board member stated such actions threaten trade operations, job creation and efforts to reduce poverty nationwide. She noted authorities can reverse account restrictions when investigations reveal no significant violations. Khatun addressed participants at a shadow parliament session focusing on banking consolidation at the FDCCI facility in Tejgaon.

Previous administrations granted bank licenses through political connections rather than merit-based criteria, Khatun observed. Some institutions became vehicles for personal wealth accumulation instead of serving public interests. The current restructuring effort presents both complexity and risk while creating uncertainty among citizens. She advocated for establishing an elected government to maintain financial sector oversight and accountability.

Dhaka Government Teachers Training College emerged victorious in the shadow parliament competition. The team defeated Southeast University representatives in debates centered on banking discipline restoration through consolidation measures.
