Fallen Boxers Body Finally Heads Home

Ghana Boxing Authority will send Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju home on June 17. The former champion died during a fight at Bukom Boxing Arena on March 29. Authority President Abraham Kotei Neequaye arranged all the paperwork and travel details. He paid $1,000 for flight costs and GHC5,000 for customs fees at Kotoka Airport. Nigeria Boxing Board of Control asked Ghana to return the body.

A special committee studied what happened during the deadly boxing match. Major Amarkai Amarteifio led the group that looked at all the facts. The team gave their findings to Ghana's Sports Ministry for review. Sports Minister Kofi Iddie Adams promised to follow the committee's advice about making boxing safer. He wants all sports groups to protect their athletes better.

The committee report might change how Ghana handles sporting events. Boxing helped make Ghana famous around the world for many years. Major Amarteifio said the sport faces serious problems that need fixing. Ghana must reform its boxing rules to prevent more deaths. The ministry will study the report and make new safety rules.
