Farmers Plant 3.87M Hectares in 2024-25 Season

Zimbabwe Farmers Hit Full Planting Target as Season Advances.

Zimbabwe's farmers planted 3.87 million hectares of crops this season, meeting their target during steady rains. Maize leads with 1.8 million hectares, followed by sorghum at 418,000 hectares and pearl millet at 275,000 hectares.

The planting of sweet potatoes and sunflowers continues. Other major crops include groundnuts, which cover 385,000 hectares; soya beans, which cover 77,000 hectares; and finger millet, which covers 27,000 hectares. Farmers have also added sugar beans, groundnuts, African peas, and cotton to their fields.

Agricultural chief Leonard Munamati reports good crop conditions across all provinces. The main December maize planting, about 65 percent of the total, stands at the late growth stage. Earlier plantings show flowering, and January crops remain in early growth.

"Crops need top-dressing fertilizer right away," Munamati said. He noted strong growth in traditional grains but warned of nitrogen shortages and water buildup from recent heavy rains. "Farmers must create drainage channels to protect their fields."

Munamati advised against new plantings of cereals, soya beans, and groundnuts. "With these rains, Farmers can plant quick-growing sugar beans, African peas, and sweet potatoes," he said.

His recommendations include careful fertilizer timing and strict weed control. Pest management remains vital, especially for Fall armyworm and African armyworm threats. "Check fields often and spray when needed. Keep watching for signs of return infestations."

The season's success depends on farmers addressing these challenges as their crops develop. Regular field checks and quick responses to problems can help ensure strong harvests.
