First Lady Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa says her vision is to instill a living heritage in Zimbabwe’s youth, weaving cultural pride into everyday life through values, beliefs, and identity. She made the remarks at the national finals of the Zviperengo Cultural Quiz Show held at Heritage Village in Harare, an initiative she launched on February 4, 2025, to reconnect learners with indigenous languages, traditions, and customs.
The event brought together thousands of students from urban and rural schools, who competed in categories that included proverbs, idioms, riddles, spelling, and traditional cuisine. Participants prepared dishes such as mbwire mbwire, sadza remapfunde, and mungai wemapfunde, showcasing their deep knowledge of their communities’ culinary heritage. The quiz also incorporated Sign Language, emphasizing inclusivity.
Dr. Mnangagwa emphasized that education is crucial for preserving heritage and transforming cultural knowledge into economic opportunities. She urged learners to carry these lessons beyond the competition and embody confidence in their identity. Winners included schools from Binga, Insiza, and Mzilikazi districts across Tonga, Xhosa, and Ndebele categories.
Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Angeline Gata praised the First Lady as a devoted custodian of culture, while Senator Charles Tawengwa highlighted the program’s role in strengthening national identity through a heritage-based curriculum. The initiative is supported by several government ministries, the University of Zimbabwe, and ZBC.
