Chief Sibasa, the elders in Insiza District, work to preserve cultural heritage

Traditional leaders in Matabeleland South Province work to maintain ancestral customs through active youth engagement. Chief Sibasa operates a culture centre where elders teach traditional dances and indigenous food preparation. The community center features a sacred cultural hut that represents spiritual foundations and ancestral wisdom. Spirit mediums act as bridges between living community members and deceased ancestors. These respected figures wear spiritually ordained attire that their ancestors determine through dreams and visions.

Community members participate in rain-making ceremonies at Njelele shrine within the Matobo Hills. Spirit mediums and traditional healers provide essential health services in remote areas where modern medical care is unavailable. Owen Moyo explained that ancestors selected him through confusing dreams until elders clarified his spiritual calling. Fellow spirit medium Phumulani Dube receives protective warnings through dreams when danger approaches. Both men wear ceremonial regalia only during ancestral duties, not personal activities, as ignoring spiritual instructions brings serious consequences.
