Big bank drops cash on a musical about a music legend. First Bank of Nigeria just funded Obey The Musical, a stage play about juju icon Evangelist Professor Ebenezer Obey Fabiyi. The show ran for two days at the Muson Centre's Agip Hall on Lagos Island, drawing holiday crowds. Joseph Edgar, called the Duke of Somolu, hosted the production, which was written by Emmanuel Adejumo, son of comedian Baba Sala. The performance blended drama with live music to chart Obey's rise from his school days to mainstream fame.
The story hit his major life points. It showed his early academic hustle and that big break at Deca Records, where he landed a deal on talent alone. A heavy scene covered the death of his wife, which reportedly wrecked the musician and got real tears from the crowd. The play also followed his shift into gospel music after becoming an evangelist. A tribute with a moment of silence happened for Segun Awolowo Jr., a late supporter, led by actor Yemi Sodimu. Otunba Bimbo Ashiru from Oodu'a Investment called Awolowo a dedicated arts patron.
FirstBank's marketing head, Olayinka Ijabiyi, said this fits the bank's push into arts and culture. He name-dropped their First@arts program and the yearly DecemberIssaVybe campaign, which is basically a seasonal marketing push for festive entertainment. The bank claims they are prepping more events for the 2026 version of that campaign. The play itself got nods for its detailed costumes, set design, and a live band that had the audience singing old hits.
