Five Bangladeshi students sent home after NIT Silchar campus violence

NIT Silchar authorities expelled five third-year Bangladeshi students after their involvement in campus violence on September 8. The students held Indian Council for Cultural Relations scholarships before their suspension. Director Dilip Kumar Baidya confirmed the students received two-semester suspensions and immediate repatriation to Bangladesh. Officials discovered narcotic substances during searches of their dormitory rooms.

The violent incident occurred during nighttime hours when intoxicated students attacked fellow Bangladeshis with weapons. Assailants used rods, knives, and screwdrivers during the thirty-minute assault that injured multiple victims. Two students required hospitalization at Silchar Medical College with serious head trauma. Witnesses reported attackers deliberately turned off lights to intensify their assault on peers and seniors who attempted intervention. The institute conducted internal investigations while ICCR officials visited the campus to review disciplinary measures.
