Florence Obi blames past admins for Unical dentistry disaster

University of Calabar Vice Chancellor Professor Florence Obi announced plans to address over-admission problems plaguing the Dentistry Department for multiple years. The crisis affects more than 300 students across six academic levels, creating significant administrative challenges for the institution. Obi acknowledged that these difficulties existed before her tenure began but committed to finding solutions before her departure. The university has initiated discussions with 13 institutions that offer similar programs to facilitate student transfers. Professional dental associations have joined these collaborative efforts to provide alternative educational pathways.

Students have rejected transfer proposals and instead advocate for integration with the Medicine and Surgery Department. Obi explained that merging programs presents practical obstacles, particularly for advanced-level students approaching graduation. The vice chancellor emphasized her determination to avoid leaving unresolved issues for her successor. Government officials have been contacted to expedite the resolution process through appropriate channels. Administrative support from higher authorities remains essential for implementing comprehensive solutions.

Social media reports claiming the program lost accreditation prompted official clarification from university leadership. Obi categorically denied these allegations as misinformation and confirmed the program maintains full accreditation status. The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria granted pre-clinical approval in November 2019 and clinical accreditation in December 2022. The next scheduled review will occur in 2027, providing sufficient time for infrastructure improvements. Historical over-enrollment beyond the approved quota of 10 students per session created current complications.

Financial limitations have constrained facility expansion, but the university purchased four additional dental chairs, raising the total to 36 units. Presidential intervention programs promise 16 additional chairs to enhance clinical training capacity. Staff recruitment authorization awaits final clearance from federal budget authorities in Abuja. Enhanced equipment and personnel will support applications for increased enrollment quotas from regulatory bodies.
