Forestry dept calls for legit vibes in forest trade

Gambian forestry authorities are demanding that timber merchants and charcoal vendors secure proper permits after discovering widespread illegal operations across the country. Director Lt Colonel Salifu Corr warned that unauthorized traders face confiscation of their goods under environmental protection statutes dating back decades, with charcoal manufacturing banned since the late 1970s.

The licensing crackdown aims to generate state income while curbing deforestation that accelerates environmental degradation. Vendors can register through regional offices nationwide, allowing legitimate commerce while supporting conservation efforts that protect woodland resources for coming generations, according to departmental leadership pushing stricter enforcement.
