Former Warriors coach Wieslaw Grabowski passed away at 70

Fans wanted Bruce Grobbelaar, and instead they got a Polish scout who quietly built half a generation of Zimbabwean talent. Wieslaw Grabowski died at 70 back in Poland after an illness.

His signature run came with Darryn Tornadoes, where a squad packed with kids dismantled CAPS United 4-0 for the Zimbabwe Cup. Silver at the All-Africa Games with the Under-23s followed. Norman Mapeza, Lloyd Chitembwe, Edelbert Dinha, Gift Muzadzi, Alois Bunjira, and Stewart Murisa all came up under him.

The Warriors job went sideways quickly. Whispers claimed he lobbied for the seat, which he denied flatly, insisting merit alone got him hired. Benching in-form striker Maxwell MaRhino Dube over fitness lit supporters up, and a 2-0 quarter-final exit against Swaziland in the COSAFA Cup had ZIFA cutting him loose within months.

He stuck around regardless. DT Africa United belonged to him, Prince Edward School got his hours, and coaching courses carried him out to China while houses in Poland, Germany, and Zimbabwe stayed in rotation. His wife Krystyna survives him, and the two ran charity work supporting autistic children.
