Four Students Hospitalized After Police Fire Teargas at School

Police hurt four kids from Good Shepherd Schools when they threw teargas during a road protest. The students had to go to hospital after breathing the dangerous gas. People from Mawale trading center were angry about dust coming from road construction work. The 23-kilometer road between Mawale and Kakiri was making everyone sick with dust. Abubaker Technical Services was building the road but would not listen when locals asked them to control the dust problem.

Residents said big trucks carrying materials made the dust worse. Many people started coughing and getting flu because of all the dirty air. Their food was covered with dust and they could not escape the mess. The protesters became violent and started hitting drivers and burning car tires on the road. They also demanded money from people trying to pass through the area.

Police officers from Bombo station came to stop the chaos. They fired teargas canisters to break up the crowd. Some of the gas went into Good Shepherd Schools and hurt innocent children. Two primary seven students, one primary six student and one senior four student passed out from the gas. Medical workers at Semuto health center treated the kids and sent them home that same evening.

The school director said police had no right to hurt students who were not part of the protest. Police arrested five people for blocking traffic and holding illegal meetings. This was the third time that week that protests happened on the same road. Officers said they had to act because the protesters were attacking drivers and stopping traffic from moving.
