Freida Pinto leads Netflix's Unaccustomed Earth in scandalous Indian American drama

Netflix casts Freida Pinto as Parul Chaudhury for their eight-episode adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri's short story collection. The streaming platform transforms "Unaccustomed Earth" into a drama series exploring an Indian American community in Cambridge. Romance and scandal emerge when a married woman reconnects with her former lover. The story examines passion and betrayal within this tight immigrant network.

John Wells partners with Madhuri Shekar to adapt the source material for television. Nisha Ganatra serves as executive producer after originally securing rights to the book. Warner Bros. Television handles production duties for the project. Lahiri joins the creative team as executive producer alongside several industry professionals.

Pinto gained recognition through her debut performance in Danny Boyle's Academy Award-winning "Slumdog Millionaire." Her television credits span multiple series, while her film work ranges across different genres. Lahiri's previous literary work reached screens when "The Namesake" became a 2006 feature film starring Kal Penn and Tabu.
