Furious Candidate Says DPP Primary Was Rigged

Rhoda Gadama Misomali wants DPP leaders to cancel the April 24 primary election results. She lost to Damson Chelewani for the Mulanje Central Constituency seat. Misomali wrote letters to top party officials asking for a new election. She claims the first election had many problems and unfair practices. The woman believes party rules were broken during the voting process.

Misomali sent her complaint to Jean Mathanga and other DPP leaders. She says the hearing committee ignored transparency rules that DPP normally follows. The committee made its decision without counting actual votes from the election. Officials used a video from Chelewani's supporters instead of the real vote totals. Misomali argues this method goes against fair election practices.

The losing candidate claims voting officials never got to speak at the hearing. Local party leaders from Mulanje District saw problems on election day. Elizabeth John and Vasco Mondiwa told officials about voting misconduct and early disruption. Their testimony pointed to serious issues with how the election was run. Election monitors were also kept away from the official hearing.

Jean Mathanga announced Chelewani as the winner on May 18. The internal committee found no proof of violence or wrongdoing during the primary, so they declared Chelewani the rightful winner of the constituency race. Misomali disagrees with this decision and wants party leaders to investigate further. She hopes DPP officials will order a completely new primary election.
