Authorities have announced extensive traffic restrictions across Gauteng during the Group of Twenty Leaders Summit in Johannesburg, with motorists facing closures and delays through multiple major corridors. The Road Traffic Management Corporation and metropolitan police departments from Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni coordinated measures affecting highways including portions of the N1, N3, N12, N14, R21, R24 and M1, along with arterial routes through Sandton, Melrose Arch, Rosebank and Nasrec. Rolling roadblocks will halt vehicle movement for periods reaching one hour when delegations travel between venues.
Grayston Drive will experience a complete shutdown during morning hours, while the Golden Highway remains closed between Rand Show Road and Soweto Highway. Officials recommended alternative paths including the M57 for trips between Ekurhuleni and Tshwane, smaller roads through Germiston and Kempton Park, and secondary routes like Beyers Naude Drive in western areas. The Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference Centre will host social summit activities, adding congestion near airport corridors.
