The G20 summit and the crash caused major traffic chaos on Johannesburg roads

Johannesburg authorities shut the R28 northbound carriageway after a truck collided with more than 30 vehicles near the Krugersdorp intersection with Hendrick Potgieter Road. Emergency personnel treated 23 individuals for minor injuries at the scene involving approximately 35 vehicles without recording fatalities. Metropolitan police urged drivers to bypass the closed section and anticipate extended delays while responders cleared wreckage scattered across lanes.

The collision compounded transportation difficulties as security forces implemented temporary highway restrictions for diplomatic motorcades traveling to the Nasrec Expo Centre summit venue. Law enforcement deployed additional officers to manage rolling closures along convoy routes, creating residual congestion throughout the metropolitan region. Officials advised motorists to exercise caution and consider alternate highways such as the N14 until normal traffic flow resumes.
