Gachagua Courts Luhya for 2027 Elections

Political Tensions Rise in Kenya as Leaders Court Western Vote Base.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua seeks support from the Luhya community ahead of Kenya's 2027 elections. He claims the region could form the next government through an alliance with Mt Kenya voters.

"It is sad that a large community like the Mulembe Nation is settling for leftovers. Such a populous group should not rely on pity when it has the numbers to lead," Gachagua said Tuesday.

His outreach includes praise for government critics from Western Kenya. He partnered with DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa to strengthen his regional influence. The area recorded 2.6 million voters in 2022, according to electoral data.

Gachagua highlighted several regional leaders during a radio interview. He praised Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, Mumias East MP Peter Salasya, and former UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala for their leadership.

The political shift comes as Raila Odinga prepares for a potential role as African Union Commission chairperson. The February 15 election pits him against Djibouti's Foreign Minister, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf.

President William Ruto recently completed a six-day tour of Western Kenya. During his visit, he criticized Gachagua, calling him "incompetent" and denouncing his "ethnic mobilization tactics."

Gachagua responded through Luhya radio stations. He claimed Ruto's administration failed to honor pre-election agreements with the region. The former deputy president revealed documents showing a promised 30% share of government appointments for Western Kenya.

The agreement between UDA, Ford Kenya, and ANC guaranteed cabinet positions, diplomatic posts, and other key roles. These positions were meant to be equally divided between the ANC and Ford Kenya parties.

"Mudavadi and Wetang'ula signed an agreement for Western Kenya to receive 30 percent of appointments. The region deserved six or seven Cabinet positions but received two," Gachagua stated.

The battle for Western Kenya's support intensifies as both leaders expand their influence. The region's political landscape faces major changes with Odinga's anticipated departure from local politics.
