Gachagua, Kalonzo, Matiang’i throw shade in 2027 brawl

Three opposition leaders battle for the chance to challenge President William Ruto in Kenya's 2027 election. Wiper party chief Kalonzo Musyoka, former Interior Secretary Fred Matiang'i and impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua each claim the right to lead opposition forces against the incumbent.

Gachagua returned from a six-week American visit demanding the top position rather than supporting others. The former deputy president argues that voter numbers should determine the opposition candidate selection process. Kalonzo counters that integrity and service records matter more than raw political support when choosing a standard-bearer.

Political experts warn that opposition fragmentation guarantees Ruto's reelection victory. Each aspirant refuses to accept a secondary role, creating tensions within the anti-government coalition ahead of the presidential contest.
