Gadkari fuels up India’s first hydrogen highways

Minister Nitin Gadkari initiated India's inaugural hydrogen highway project on Friday. The government allocated Rs 500 crore across five consortiums to establish fueling infrastructure along ten strategic routes. Thirty-seven hydrogen-powered vehicles will participate in trials supported by nine refueling stations along national corridors. This infrastructure aims to reduce dependence on crude oil imports that currently cost India Rs 22 lakh crore annually.

The World Hydrogen India summit hosted the announcement through S&P Global Commodity Insights. Industry leaders examined regulatory frameworks and financing models for sustainable hydrogen ecosystems. Chemical companies explored cleaner production methods while experts assessed green hydrogen alternatives for fertilizer manufacturing. Port authorities discussed international certification standards and export logistics to meet global quality requirements.
