Gambia councils drag themselves to class, vow to stop flopping

Local government officials committed to improving operational standards after completing a five-day training session on Friday at Tendaba Camp. The Gambia Association of Local Government Authorities partnered with the EU-UNDP GREAT Initiative to deliver instruction on planning and fundraising to executives from eight area councils. Mansakonko Area Council Chief Executive Lamin LM Marri said the program addressed weaknesses exposed by the Local Government Commission of Inquiry.

Brikama Area Council Administrator Aminata Ndongo rejected claims that councils lack competence, and urged staff to address deficiencies directly. GALGA President Mahamadou Ceesay described the workshop as preparation for council leaders to become reform advocates. Ministry of Lands representative Mamoudou Bah called for stronger partnerships between councils and citizens to support policy implementation.
