Gambia Gives Nod to New Mental Health Policy

The Gambia just updated its mental health policy after 17 years. Officials from the National Mental Health Program worked with various partners to create this new 2024 policy. They replaced the outdated 2007 version to address current mental health needs across the country. Planning Director Gibril Jarju said they talked with many people at the community level to understand the real problems facing Gambians.

The policy development process involved extensive public input rather than being created behind closed doors. Mr Jarju emphasized that community ownership happens when people participate in creating policies. National Assembly Health Committee Chairman Amadou Camara stressed that mental health affects everyone. He noted that despite policy creation not being parliament's main job, they actively participated in its development.

Health Ministry Permanent Secretary Yusupha Touray called for fighting mental health stigma nationwide. He requested that partner organizations help establish regional mental healthcare centers throughout the country. Mr Touray highlighted anti-stigma campaigns as essential parts of building better healthcare systems. The collaborative approach ensures the policy addresses actual challenges Gambians face regarding mental health services.
