Gambia Nominates Tambadou for Historic ICJ Judge Role

The Gambia has put forward Abubacarr Marie Tambadou for a judge at the World Court. He used to be a justice minister and is known for taking Myanmar to court for harming the Rohingya people.

Mr. Tambadou served as justice minister from 2017 to 2020. During this time, he demonstrated great moral and legal skills. His work gained attention around the world. In 2021, he was named for a Nobel Peace Prize. In 2020, Time magazine listed him among its 100 Most Influential People.

He has spent more than 20 years working in international criminal justice, including work at the Rwanda tribunal and as head clerk for the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals. His nomination shows that The Gambia wants to help global justice and use its legal know-how worldwide.

The Gambia Government strongly backs Mr. Tambadou for the International Court of Justice job opening in 2026. This marks the first time The Gambia has ever put forward someone since the court began in 1945.

The government said The Gambia has helped grow international law and speaks up for human rights globally but has never before sent a candidate to the court. The 2026 election gives The Gambia a chance to change this. The government fully supports Mr. Tambadou for the position.

The government pointed to his background in international law. He led The Gambia's case against Myanmar for breaking the Genocide Convention. This shows his skills and how much he cares about international justice.

The government thinks his election would mark a huge step for the country. It would show how much The Gambia values upholding international law and human rights.
