Gambian officials taught business owners about new African trade rules during a workshop. The three-day meeting at Bakadaji Hotel focused on helping companies prepare for continental commerce opportunities. Trade ministry workers partnered with tax collectors and international groups to run the sessions.
The workshop covered African Continental Free Trade Area rules that decide which products get special treatment. Deputy Secretary Mamadi Dampha said private companies need to learn these regulations before trading across Africa begins. Gambia signed the trade agreement in 2018 and approved it one year later.
The country already submitted its tax reduction plans through regional partnerships. Government leaders want to remove fees on most goods traded between African nations. Officials also updated customs procedures and improved ports to handle more international shipments.
Japan customs expert Mariko Haga praised the training program and said the trade deal should boost economic growth. She noted that customs agencies face new challenges beyond just collecting revenue. Local customs chief Alhagie Mbye thanked organizers for arranging the important business education event.
