Gambia VP Jallow grilled over Majalis scabies and Sinchu fire tragedy

UNICEF Representative Ms. Nafisa Binte Shafique recognized the administration's successful submission of its periodic report to the Committee on the Rights of the Child.

Shafique outlined UNICEF's establishment of a child rights center, which is being partnered with the University of The Gambia and the National Human Rights Commission. She expressed concern over escalating violations within Islamic school settings. Recent incidents encompassed scabies outbreaks and a fatal fire at Sinchu, claiming two young lives. The representative urged proactive governmental intervention through enhanced monitoring protocols. UNICEF requested increased funding for the procurement of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food to combat severe acute malnutrition.
