Gambian Assembly rocked by International IDEA diversity frenzy

International IDEA delivered specialized training sessions for Gambian National Assembly Members focused on inclusion and diversity management. The European Union funded this initiative through the CODE Project over two days. Speaker Fabakary Tombong Jatta stressed that parliamentarians must represent all segments of society as the voice of the people. He described diversity management as a strategic necessity for effective policymaking and the development of democratic institutions. The legislature demonstrates an ongoing commitment to strengthening parliamentary capacity through such professional development.

Mrs. Jainaba Faye from the International IDEA emphasized the transformative role of parliamentarians in advancing inclusive principles. She noted that lawmakers possess the power to create systems that reflect the needs of all citizens, rather than benefiting select groups. Faye highlighted Gambia's cultural, ethnic, gender, religious, and perspective diversity as national strengths requiring deliberate inclusion efforts. Representatives must address the unique experiences of diverse constituencies, including urban and rural, young and old, and affluent and marginalized groups. Policies failing to account for this diversity risk exclude people and erode governmental trust.
