Gambian Lawmakers Renew Push for Independent Teacher Service Commission

Members of parliament want a special group to take care of teachers across the country. These lawmakers think teachers deserve better treatment and support from the government. They spoke up during a Wednesday meeting at the National Assembly about creating a Teacher Service Commission. The MPs believe this new group would handle hiring teachers and deciding promotions. Many parliament members feel angry about how the Ministry of Public Service treats education workers.

The minister in charge of public service told MPs that a committee already does this job. He said this committee has worked since 2014 and handles teacher matters just fine. The minister explained that government officials reviewed many departments and decided not to create new ones. He worries that starting a Teacher Service Commission would cost too much money. The minister thinks the current committee can do better work instead of building something new.

Parliament members disagreed with the minister and said teachers need their dedicated commission. Bakary Badjie from Foni Bintang argued that education suffers without proper teacher support. Other MPs agreed that teachers face problems the current committee cannot solve. Yahya Menteng Sanyang from Latrikunda Sabiji asked about confusion between different government groups. The minister promised no conflicts exist between the various departments handling teacher issues.

The argument between parliament and the minister continues about teacher welfare. MPs asked for detailed information about what the current committee actually does. They want more control over decisions affecting teachers and schools.
