Gambian Police Arrest Sureties After Politician Jumps Bail

The police have arrested two people who helped bail out Mbemba Drammeh. Drammeh used to be part of the National People's Party (NPP). He was arrested last month after saying on TV that he helped rig the 2021 elections.

The two people who were arrested were Musa Kanteh from Tabokoto and Saidou Bayo from Wellingara. They said the police asked them to come to Kairaba, Kanifing, and then Banjul. They were still being held there last night.

The police told them that Drammeh did not report back after he got permission to go to Basse for two days. The police think Drammeh may have left the country to avoid going to court.

Drammeh called later to say he was back in France. "Mbemba Drammeh himself called to say he arrived in France," said Kanteh, one of the people who helped bail him out. The police said we would be kept here overnight until they hear from the authorities."

Modou Musa Sisawo, the police spokesperson, confirmed that the police were holding the two people. He said that Drammeh left the country and did not show up for his court date, but he did not give any more details.
