Gathungu audit cites KICC Sh30M hotel fees, missing land deeds

Auditor General Nancy Gathungu revealed serious financial irregularities at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre during her 2024 review. KICC directors violated state corporation regulations by conducting nine board meetings at expensive hotels rather than official premises. The corporation spent 30.9 million shillings on directors' compensation while hosting these unauthorized luxury gatherings. Management provided no valid justification for abandoning proper meeting protocols. These actions directly contravened the Mwongozo Code governing state agencies.

The audit exposed that KICC operates without proper title deeds for land valued at 2.3 billion shillings. Three parcels remain unregistered despite parliamentary committee directives for immediate registration. The corporation made questionable payments totaling 1.4 billion shillings to the Ministry of Defence without proper documentation. Additionally, 188 million shillings in debts have remained uncollected for over two years. KICC also failed to meet disability employment requirements, maintaining only three percent representation instead of the mandated five percent.
