Georgescu Detained in Bucharest Traffic Stop Amid Election Probe

Police stopped a man named Călin Georgescu in his car on Wednesday in Bucharest. The police arrested him because they thought he did something wrong during the last election.

Mr. Georgescu won the first part of the presidential election last year. No one expected him to win. His friends said he was going to sign up for new elections when the police stopped him.

Two political groups asked their friends to go to the building where police took Mr. Georgescu. People put up walls around this building. Many people came to shout because they felt angry about the arrest.

The police said Mr. Georgescu might have done bad things, such as joining a group that wants to break the country's rules.

The old president of Romania, Mr. Iohannis, left his job earlier this month. Before he left, he showed secret papers. These papers said many TikTok accounts helped Mr. Georgescu. Romanian spies said Russia made these accounts to trick people.

Some people wrote a message on the internet asking, "Where is democracy?" They sent this message to President Trump, Elon Musk, and Vice-President Vance.

The police searched many houses across Romania. They looked for 27 people who might have made a bad group that hated other types of people. The police also checked if someone lied about money for the election.

Some people say Mr. Georgescu likes Russia. He says good things about some old Romanian leaders who did very bad things last century. Mr. Georgescu told the BBC he doesn't work for Moscow, but he thinks Mr. Putin is a "patriot and a leader."

A Romanian leader said Elon Musk tried to change the Romanian election by writing nice things about Mr. Georgescu on the internet.
