Ghana celebrated 65 years as a republic with a massive youth parade at Black Star Square. Over 20,000 students from schools across the country marched together during the special event. The National Cadet Corps organized the parade and showed off their training to government leaders. Defense Minister Edward Omane Boamah spoke for President Mahama at the ceremony. He praised the young people for their discipline and dedication to Ghana.
The government announced plans to hire 12,000 new soldiers over the next four years. Officials also promised free college education for students with disabilities and free sanitary products for girls. First-year university students will not pay certain fees under a new program. Youth Development Minister George Opare Addo talked about helping young people find jobs and learn new skills. He said the government cannot solve problems alone and needs everyone to work together.
The celebration had a theme about youth reflecting on loyalty and discipline toward their country. Ministers told the students they represent hope for Ghana's future. The cadet corps started 71 years ago at Ghana Secondary Technical School and has grown tremendously. Leaders gave awards to people who have supported the youth program over many years. The event reminded everyone that education remains the biggest challenge facing young Ghanaians today.
