Ghana Ports to Stay Open All Night from July

President John Dramani Mahama announced that Ghana will start round-the-clock operations at Tema and Takoradi ports. The move forms part of his government's 24-hour economy plan that launches July 1, 2025. Mahama spoke at the 2025 Ghana Horticulture Expo where he outlined the new policy. The president wants to boost production and increase exports across all business sectors. Multiple government agencies are working together to make the ports operate day and night.

Ghana's two main shipping hubs have struggled with cargo backups and slow processing times for years. Business owners complain about high costs and delays that hurt their ability to export goods quickly. The new system should reduce waiting times and make trade easier for companies. Port workers will handle shipments around the clock instead of stopping at traditional closing hours. This change could help Ghana compete better with other African countries.

The Ministry of Trade and Ministry of Transport are coordinating the port changes with several other groups. Ghana Revenue Authority and Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority will help implement the new schedule. Ghana Shippers' Council also supports the transition to continuous operations. Exporters have asked for extended port hours for many years. The July launch date will test whether the 24-hour economy plan can transform Ghana's business environment.
