Ghana Rail Strike Brings Trains To Screeching Halt

Railway staff across Ghana stopped working on Monday because they needed their money. Almost a thousand employees at Ghana Railway Company Limited have not received pay for seven months. They showed up at work wearing red clothes with signs asking for their salaries. Union leader Franklin Cobbinah told reporters that workers will come to the offices but refuse to operate any trains. The strike affects all rail services from Tema to Accra, Tarkwa, Takoradi, and Kumasi.

Workers also want better job conditions after three years without a pay raise. Cobbinah explained how hard life became for employees with families who cannot pay basic bills. The union waits for railway management or government officials to address their demands right away. Starting Tuesday, May 13, no trains will run anywhere in the country. The labor action continues until workers receive all missing paychecks and better treatment.
