Ghana tightens SIM rules to curb phone fraud

The country needs new SIM cards to be registered by July. The government says past registrations had problems because people's fingerprints didn't match their phone cards properly. This made it easy for scammers to use multiple SIMs without anyone catching them. Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George talked about these issues at an Accra press meeting.

He promised the upcoming system will use better tech without making people wait in long lines. Everyone will learn about this through public education campaigns before July arrives. The minister called this registration extremely important for national security reasons. He wants Ghanaians working together to help make these plans succeed.

President Mahama plans to teach digital skills to one million young people. The program starts on April 16 at the Kofi Annan Centre with 500 participants from four regions. Half the spots go to women, showing a commitment to equal opportunities. Mr. George believes Ghana can soon become Africa's top digital talent hub. Private companies already show strong interest in supporting this vision.
