Hundreds of Ghanaians packed the Capital View Hotel in Koforidua last Thursday for a major constitutional review meeting. The Constitution Review Committee brought their fourth nationwide tour to the Eastern Region on July 3rd. Regional ministers, traditional chiefs, local government heads, religious leaders, and regular citizens all showed up ready to talk. Students, business people, and security officers joined the crowd for the heated discussion. The event went live online for people across Ghana to watch from home.
Citizens spoke up about major problems with how the country runs. They want local communities to control their natural resources and get fair profits from mining and oil. Many people pushed for direct elections of district chief executives instead of presidential appointments. Some suggested making presidential and parliamentary terms longer than four years. Others want to completely rebuild the Council of State to make it work better.
The crowd complained about political parties controlling government jobs and appointments at state companies. They demanded action against politicians who buy votes with money during elections. People with disabilities asked for stronger legal protections in the new constitution. Many speakers called for tougher enforcement of laws protecting the independence of courts and the Electoral Commission.
The committee praised Eastern Region citizens for their clear ideas and strong participation. They thanked the National Commission for Civic Education office for organizing the event. The next meeting happens July 11th at GNAT Hall in Ho, Volta Region. People can also send written ideas to the committee through email. The group reminded everyone to stay involved as active citizens in shaping Ghana's future.
