Ghost Witness Scandal Grips Kanu Trial

The Indigenous People of Biafra claims Nigerian authorities used a dead man's statement as evidence against their leader Nnamdi Kanu. Group spokesman Emma Powerful said prosecutors presented newspaper quotes from Emeyiri Uzoma Benjamin during court proceedings on June 13. The man known as Onye Army supposedly confessed to killing 30 people for a burial ceremony. Powerful stated Onye Army died inside government custody and never testified in court. He cannot face cross-examination about these claims.

The prosecution witness read newspaper reports about alleged confessions but admitted never interviewing the source directly. IPOB argues this violates Nigerian law because the evidence comes from hearsay and unverified statements. The group says courts cannot use confessions from people who are unavailable for questioning. They claim the government fabricated evidence to support their terrorism case. The trial continues despite legal challenges about court jurisdiction and detention length.
