GHPAC calls Congress to reauthorize lifesaving plan

Ghana Diaspora Public Affairs Collective asks Congress to fully reauthorize the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief immediately. Congress missed the March 25 deadline, creating uncertainty about this important program. PEPFAR has saved over 25 million lives during its 20-year history as a successful bipartisan initiative. The program helped fight HIV/AIDS worldwide and strengthened health systems across developing nations. Not reauthorizing it puts many lives at risk.

The delay worries Ghanaian Americans because it damages trust between America and its African allies. GHPAC President Adjoa Kyerematen warns this opens doors for destabilizing forces who oppose American values. Ghana might need to form partnerships with other world powers if America fails to fulfill its PEPFAR commitment through 2030. The program helped Ghana reduce mother-to-child HIV transmission, but these services face cuts without renewed funding. This affects American influence in regions where anti-Western groups operate.

GHPAC organized a major Capitol Hill Advocacy Day with 30 people from various African diaspora groups. They met with 13 congressional offices from both parties to discuss global health priorities. Representative Jonathan Jackson invited them to the Speaker's Gallery to raise awareness. Secretary Marco Rubio issued a limited waiver to restart critical HIV services, but many important activities remain unfunded.
