Giyani kids ditch boats for desks after flood hell

Students finally returned to class after floods wrecked their province. Giyani High School in Limpopo reopened following devastating floods that damaged over a thousand homes and claimed numerous lives. The disaster, declared a national emergency, caused billions in damages across Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

President Cyril Ramaphosa visited affected areas, including communities grieving lost family members. Major rivers like the Crocodile and Limpopo overflowed, destroying infrastructure and isolating villages. Kruger National Park was forced to close and evacuate visitors due to submerged roads and bridges.

The education department delayed the academic year because hundreds of schools were inaccessible. Learners like Danisile Nkuna expressed excitement about reuniting with friends and continuing studies. Catch-up plans are being implemented for lost learning time.

Government relief efforts are coordinating aid distribution and infrastructure assessment. The focus now shifts to rebuilding and creating more resilient systems for future extreme weather events. Community solidarity has been highlighted as a key factor in recovery.
