Gomashie opens Africa heritage workshop in Accra

Ghana's tourism minister has challenged African heritage professionals to reclaim control over how the continent's cultural stories are told and interpreted. Abla Dzifa Gomashie addressed participants at a regional workshop focused on World Heritage interpretation, emphasizing that communities must lead their own narrative development rather than accepting colonial perspectives.

The gathering at the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel assembled experts from multiple nations to develop strategies for authentic heritage communication. Representatives from WHIPIC, the African World Heritage Fund, and the Ghana Commission for UNESCO joined the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts in organizing the event, which seeks to produce actionable frameworks for sustainable cultural development.

Gomashie highlighted Ghana's recent UNESCO recognition of the Amphitheatre textile traditions as an example of successful community engagement in preserving authentic cultural practices.
