Government Reforms Boost Tea Quality for Farmers

Mutahi Kagwe, the Agriculture and Livestock Development CS, says the government wants to help tea farmers earn more money. He discussed this in the Senate on Wednesday. The government plans to monitor how tea factories are managed and ensure they follow the rules.

The CS also wants to stop people from selling tea leaves illegally, as this kind of tea is often low-quality. The government will enforce new rules to prevent this. They will also create guidelines to stop farmers from picking low-quality tea leaves. These guidelines will become official government rules.

Kagwe says the ministry will work with Parliament. They want to change some tea laws to solve problems in the tea industry. The government will give money to build special tea processing centers. These centers will help make Kenyan tea more valuable. The factories will learn how to make different kinds of specialty teas that buyers want.

The government wants to help small tea factories make a special tea called Orthodox tea. They will make space available for a shared factory in a special economic area. The government also encourages tea factories to work together with private companies, which will help them make tea more valuable.

The CS says it is building a tea tasting center in Mombasa and buying equipment to check tea quality. The government will teach tea exporters how to package and brand their tea and farmers about what buyers want, which will help farmers sell their tea for better prices.

Kagwe says the government will advertise Kenyan tea around the world. They will focus on traditional markets and new ones. The government representatives will go on trade missions and promotion events. They want more people to know about and buy Kenyan tea.
