Govt digs into Bulawayo council mess

The government wants to investigate Bulawayo City Council after finding problems with how local councils operate across Zimbabwe. Officials decided to target Bulawayo as their next priority following a recent investigation into Harare City Council. Minister Daniel Garwe said urban councils suffer from poor management and need detailed examinations. The President ordered these investigations because city councils have serious decay in their operations. Retired judge Justice Maphios Cheda led the team that looked into Harare's problems.

Ministry spokesman Gabriel Masvora confirmed that officials have already suggested investigating all urban councils around the country. He explained that the President holds the power to create these investigation teams under the Commission of Inquiry Act. The Local Government Ministry worries about how most councils run their daily business. Officials want thorough investigations targeting every urban authority in Zimbabwe. They believe these examinations will help councils improve their governance standards.

Last year two Bulawayo councillors faced corruption charges after they allegedly asked for a twenty thousand dollar payment from a cement factory investor. Deputy Mayor Edwin Ndlovu and Finance Committee chairman Mpumelelo Moyo were accused of demanding this facilitation fee. Both councillors received bail and await their court cases. The incident highlights the type of misconduct that concerns government officials. These problems show why the authorities want to examine council operations more closely.
