Govt Pumps Billions Into Lake Victoria Fish Revival Plan

The government is building twelve fish landing sites and a training center to strengthen the fishing industry near Lake Victoria. These projects aim to increase earnings for fishermen across five counties. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki visited the Kabonyo Fisheries center in Kisumu County to check construction progress. Three sites have been finished in Siaya, Busia, and Migori counties, with nine more planned soon. Each location costs approximately Sh150-160 million.

These facilities help standardize fish handling from reception through cold storage before sale. The Sh1.3 billion training center serves as a flagship project for improving the blue economy. It will produce 28 million fingerlings yearly for farmers and lake restocking. The entire investment exceeds Sh3 billion and targets an industry supporting millions of Kenyans. The government has already given Sh124 million to beach management units, with another Sh205 million coming soon.

Kindiki emphasized that their focus remains on economic development rather than politics. He wants local communities around Lake Victoria to benefit from expanded opportunities in fisheries. The administration seeks to fulfill promises made to residents in these lakeside regions. This approach prioritizes service delivery for people depending on fish-related livelihoods.
